The last six weeks, I worked on set for the Swiss Indie-Movie "Kora", which was very challenging because of its uniqueness. Besides the main camera, a Red Epic, the 2nd unit a Sony F55 and a Canon C300, there were also consumer level cameras, such as the Panasonic GH4 and Sony A7S II. Those cameras don't have to match up on the same level like the Epic of course. Moreover, all the other cameras, besides the Red Epic, follow a different concept. We'd like to match up the cameras in terms of colors though, so they will line up somewhat similar together.
A well thought out strategy has to be chosen, otherwise the grading in post will have a bad ending. We did a camera test in the beginning and regularly color charts, so we have references later in post. One of the most important things though, was that we decided on set where we want to go with the look. With Raw, you have plenty of color information, so you can go nuts in color grading. With footage from consumer cameras though, you have to know on set what your image should look like at the end.
